Queen Saovabha Memorial Institute and Snake Farm
Queen Saovabha Memorial Institute is the place that various vaccines and serums are produced to both protect and save people from diseases, such as small pox, rabies and even snake bites. The establishment of this institute arose when Somdet Krom Phraya Damrongrachanuphap initiated the process to prevent rabies, in dedication to his daughter who passed away, fighting
against rabies in the Year 1912, it was named The Pasteur Institute in memory of Louis Pasteur the French scientist who discovered the rabies vaccine. This institute was affiliated to the Thai Red Cross in the Year 1917.
Afterwards, H. M. Somdet Phra Mongkut Klao, King Rama VI, donated his personal fund to enable a new building to be constructed within the same area. It was to
be a memorial dedicated to H. M. Somdet Phrasri Phatcharinthra The Regent Queen, and Royal consort of H. M. Somdet Phra Chunlachom Klao, King Rama V, whose maiden name was HRH. Princess Saovabha Phongsri, who also, always a great patron to the institute. The new name of the institute then became The Saovabha Memorial Institute and was graciously opened on the 7th December 1922, moving all operations to the present location as we see it today.
Thailand is the home of more than 180 varieties of snakes of which 56 are important venomous. Imported antivenoms are not always effective in neutralizing Thai snake venoms and it becomes necessary to establish a local production facility that utilizes the venom of snake from this region for making antivennoms. Dr. Leopold Robert, the first director, and the Pasteur Institute of Paris
helped the Thai Monarch to develop this facility. A snake farm was thus established at the Queen Saovabha Memorial Institute (QSMI), and was opened on November 22, 1923 by Queen Sawang Vadhana, the President of the Thai Red Cross Society. It is the second snake farm in the world after Butantan in Brazil.
